Some Background Information and Q&A
Our eclectic approach to healing combines traditional Physical Therapy tools with more progressive Mind-Body methods that is the John Barnes Myofascial Release, Myofascial Unwinding to restore, rebalance and bring the human structure to optimal alignment.
In order to understand Myofascial Release, you need to know what fascia is and how it functions.
Q1: What is Fascia?
SweaterMyo refers to a muscle. Fascia is a tough, connective tissue that supports, surrounds every muscle, nerve, blood vessel, bone, organ down to the cellular level in your body. Fascia is a continuous, uninterrupted physiological system that runs in your body from your head to your toes.
Imagine it as a three-dimensional spider web or a thread in a "sweater" that connects and influences your entire physical structure.
When the fascia is fully open, flexible and relaxed, your whole structure is aligned, balanced, mobile and able to function at its optimum as it was designed. Trauma, inflammation, surgeries, repetitive overuse and poor posture create restrictions and thicken the fascia. As the fascia looses its extensibility and flexibility it hardens, binds down and pulls the whole "sweater" out of its relaxed and balanced status.
Myofascial restrictions cause your body to be out of optimal alignment, not allowing it to work properly and freely that over time causes lack of mobility, dysfunction and pain. The important part is to understand how your whole body is connected via fascial system and how your pain may be local to the restrictions or in remote areas of the immobile parts.
Conventional medical tests like X-rays, MRIs, CAT scans etc do not show up any myofascial restrictions, and you may have been told that all tests are negative. We know that your pain is real and its roots and causes most likely are related to myofascial restrictions.
Q2. What is Myofascial Release (MFR) / Cranio-Sacral (CS) Therapy?
MFR is gentle and very effective hands on tissue technique that helps to release the entire myofascial complex and eliminate pressure from pain sensitive structures.
Upon the comprehensive initial evaluation addressing your posture, structural alignment, range of motion, myofascial flexibility and mobility, we will identify the areas and parts of your body that need to be released and opened.
Highly trained therapists will apply gentle, sustained pressure into your body tissue and release fascial holding patterns layer by layer, creating lasting results.
At Wholistic Therapeutics we use Myofascial Release and Cranio-Sacral Therapy as taught by John F. Barnes.
Myofascial Release is a whole body approach that addresses the root-cause of your symptoms and releases them thus allowing your body to return to its natural grace, and fluidity of movement. You will experience healing on a faster rate and it will be more complete and lasting.
Benefits of MFR: Improved structural/postural alignment Increased flexibility and strength Decreased pain Return of function Increased body awareness Increased energy level Feeling more balanced physically, emotionally, mentally Enhanced quality of life
Q3. What is the Mind-Body connection?
Lasting healing involves more then structural/physical improvement alone. There is an intimate connection between body and mind and often one reflects the other. It is a two way communication.
A shift in awareness needs to take place in order to create positive and lasting changes. Old, outdated messages, patterns and beliefs need to be released in order to create space for healthier, freer and more constructive ways of being.
We will help you to facilitate this process that involves calming the nervous system by relaxing the body and quieting the mind in a safe and comfortable environment. In this state, you can more consciously listen to the messages from your body that often involves Myofascial Unwinding.
Q4. What is Myofascial Unwinding?
With the safe environment and open focus of the therapist, your body may undergo the process of unwinding. Myofascial Unwinding is a spontaneous movement of the body via the mind. With unwinding you will achieve tremendous fascial releases three-dimensionally.
Myofascial Unwinding is an inherent self-correcting process that helps to bring bracing holding patterns, memories, emotions or sensations into the conscious awareness and release them. All those represent past trauma and the process allows the body/mind and nervous system to learn, to shift, and to heal enabling integration and wholeness.
Myofascial Unwinding is a wonderful way for the body/mind complex to free and correct itself and create space for healthier and positive changes.
Q5. What are the effects of Myofascial Release?
Myofascial Release treatment is performed on the skin to effectively release the restrictions. Please do not put any lotion on your skin prior to your session. Lotion/oils prevent the friction interface needed for fascial release. In order to treat you properly and visually assess your structure please wear a two-piece bathing suit, pants and bra or gym shorts and sports bra/tank ir presence/awareness in their body. There is also some dialogue. Feedback from the patient regarding their body's feeling and sensations may be needed to be more effective with the treatment.
Sometimes there may be temporally increase in pain or symptoms after treatment. Please do not be alarmed, but communicate this with the therapist. This may be the "healing crisis" period that is often followed by a significant improvement. Very often remarkable improvement is noted during or after treatment. You may also experience pains in new areas, nausea, or emotional changes. All those symptoms are normal but temporary reactions to deep and positive changes that take place with fascial releases and your healing process. Remember that healing does not happen in a straight line.
When tight and restricted tissue is elongated the metabolic waste products are released into the inter-cellular space that may cause some soreness. We recommend drinking a lot of healthy fluids to flush your system from toxins and minimize the unpleasant symptoms.
